Five Years at Compass: What Starting Over During a Pandemic Taught Me About Luxury Real Estate in Austin
On March 9th, 2020, I became a licensed real estate agent in Austin, Texas. Three days later, the world shut down.
I had spent months studying for my license, imagining what it would feel like to finally start the career I had been working toward. What I did not imagine was launching that career into a global pandemic, with open houses cancelled, showings restricted, and the entire industry holding its breath. But Austin, as it tends to do, kept moving anyway - and so did I.
I hung my license with JBGoodwin Realtors, and I am genuinely grateful I did. Their two-week training camp for new agents was thorough, structured, and gave me a foundation I still draw from today. I learned the fundamentals of how real estate works, how to serve clients, and how to navigate a market that was anything but predictable. JBGoodwin gave me the tools to get started, and I am a better agent for the time I spent there.
The phone call that changed everything
A few months in, I was working with a tenant on a luxury lease in Austin. The other side of that transaction was represented by Robin Banister, and something about how she operated stopped me in my tracks. The professionalism, the depth of market knowledge, the calm confidence she brought to a negotiation - it was exactly the kind of agent I wanted to become.
When she asked if I had ever considered joining her at Compass, I did not hesitate for long. The stars aligned is the only way I know how to describe it. Some decisions feel right the moment you make them, and this was one of them.
What Compass actually is - and why it matters for Austin luxury sellers
Before I joined Compass, I knew it was a tech-forward brokerage. What I did not fully appreciate until I was inside it was how meaningfully that technology translates into better outcomes for clients - specifically for sellers in Austin's luxury market.
The marketing and design tools available through Compass are genuinely best in class. When we take a luxury listing to market in Tarrytown, Pemberton Heights, Westlake, Rollingwood, or Spanish Oaks, the presentation reflects that. Compass gives us the infrastructure to produce listing campaigns that match the caliber of the properties we represent. Property websites, print materials, digital advertising - everything is cohesive, polished, and built to attract the right buyers.
Then there is the Private Exclusives program. For sellers in Austin's luxury space who value discretion, privacy, or simply want to test positioning before going fully public, Private Exclusives offers an option that most brokerages cannot match. It allows a listing to be marketed to Compass buyers network-wide before hitting the MLS - a real strategic advantage in a market where the right buyer sometimes exists before the sign goes in the yard.
What Nicole Kessler gave me that no training program could
Joining Nicole Kessler as her Listing Partner at Compass changed the trajectory of my career in ways I am still discovering. Nicole did not just teach me how to price luxury properties in Austin - she gave me the confidence to stand behind those numbers.
Luxury pricing in neighborhoods like Tarrytown, Rollingwood, and Westlake is not a spreadsheet exercise. It is a conversation that requires deep knowledge of the market, the ability to read a buyer pool accurately, and the conviction to hold a position when the pressure is on. Nicole built that in me. She modeled what it looks like to advise a client honestly, price a property strategically, and guide a seller through the emotional complexity of one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives.
She is my partner, my mentor, and frankly, one of the sharpest minds in Austin real estate. I do not take lightly what it means to work alongside someone like that every day.
Five years in Austin luxury real estate - what I know now
Austin has changed dramatically since 2020. The market has accelerated, corrected, and recalibrated. The neighborhoods we specialize in - Tarrytown, Pemberton Heights, Westlake, Rollingwood, Spanish Oaks - have each moved through their own cycles, and each one requires a different read at any given moment.
What has stayed constant is the value of showing up with real knowledge, genuine relationships, and a commitment to serving sellers well. Compass gives us the tools. Nicole built the team. Five years in, I am more convinced than ever that this is exactly where I am supposed to be.
Here is to the next five.
